"Ultimate Girls Night Out" Summer 2018

In Afton Minnesota, we celebrate the women or our community every 3rd Thursday.  Local businesses offer various activities and specials in their establishments. 

Here at Afton’s Old School Art Studio we not only honor the women of our community, we choose an inspiring notable women of history to celebrate.  I know you’ll agree that we have selected some fantastic role models; scientists, writers, pioneers, social reformers, singers, actresses and more.
We recently asked you to vote on 6 per month - we have narrowed the list to 3 per month. Please choose again or make a choice for the first time.
Below is a mini-profile of each fantastic lady.  Read through each one and let us know which beautiful badass woman you decide would be perfect for each month.

MAY CHOICES


Audrey Hepburn - Actress, fashion icon, and philanthropist Audrey Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929, in Brussels, Belgium. At age 22, she starred in the Broadway production of Gigi. Two years later, she starred in the film Roman Holiday (1953) with Gregory Peck.

Cher – Born May 20, 1946. Married twice, Cher has two children: Her son, Chaz Bono, who was originally named Chastity and underwent female-to-male gender transition in 2008, is from her first marriage to the late Bono, who died in a skiing accident on January 5, 1998.
 
Gladys Knight: Gladys Maria Knight, known as the "Empress of Soul", is an American singer, songwriter and actress. A seven-time Grammy Award-winner, Knight is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, for both the Motown and Buddah Records labels, with her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, which included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Guest.



JUNE CHOICES


Marilyn Monroe - (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and was emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality.

Judy Garland – An actress and singer, Judy was born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Garland, the star of many classic musical films, was known for her tremendous talent and troubled life. The daughter of vaudeville professionals, she started her stage career as a child

Nancy Sinatra: Nancy Sandra Sinatra (born June 8, 1940) is an American singer and actress. She is the elder daughter of Frank Sinatra and Nancy (Barbato) Sinatra, and is widely known for her 1966 signature hit "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'". Other defining recordings include "Sugar Town", the 1967 number one "Somethin' Stupid"

Frida Kahlo - de Rivera, born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón; July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican artist who painted many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico.

Phyllis Diller - Phyllis Ada Driver (July 17, 1917 – August 20, 2012), better known as Phyllis Diller, was an American actress and stand-up comedian, best known for her eccentric stage persona, her self-deprecating humor, her wild hair and clothes, and her exaggerated, cackling laugh.

Princess Diana - Born Diana Spencer on July 1, 1961, Princess Diana became Lady Diana Spencer after her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer in 1975. She married the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, on July 29, 1981. They had two sons and later divorced in 1996.

Lily Tomlin - Mary Jean "Lily" Tomlin (born September 1, 1939) is an American actress, comedian, writer, singer, and producer. Tomlin began her career as a stand-up comedian, and performing Off-Broadway during the 1960s. Her breakout role was performing as a cast member on the variety show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In
 
Bridget Bardot - Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot is a French actress, singer, dancer, and fashion model, who later became an animal rights activist. She was one of the best known sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s and was widely referred to by her initials, B.B.. Bardot was an aspiring ballerina in her early life

Minnie Pearl - Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon (October 25, 1912 – March 4, 1996), known professionally as her stage character Minnie Pearl, was an American country comedian who appeared at the Grand Ole Opry for more than 50 years (from 1940 to 1991) and on the television show Hee Haw from 1969 to 1991. 


Sarah Bernhardt - original name Henriette-Rosine Bernard, byname the Divine Sarah, French la Divine Sarah, (born October 22/23, 1844, Paris, France—died March 26, 1923, Paris), the greatest French actress of the later 19th century and one of the best-known figures in the history of the stage.


Julie Andrews: Julie Andrews, Actress: The Sound of Music. Julia Elizabeth Wells was born on October 1, 1935, in England. Her mother, Barbara Ward (Morris), and stepfather, both vaudeville performers, discovered her freakish but undeniably lovely four-octave singing voice and immediately got her a singing career.

Hello Fellow Creatives!


We are very excited to link our Blog and Website together!

Afton's Old School Art Studio is getting our website ready for the 2018 season! We will be updating our courses and bringing new classes and artists to the studio. We are even planning to stream our courses online for those of you who are unable to make it to the studio. 

Those of you here on our Creative Chicks Café can join the fun happening on our sister site too! Just click the link below and your email address will be added to our event list. We promise not to overwhelm you with emails. Just a few times a year we will send you information on the events we have coming up and we will also let you know when a new Blog post is here on this site too.
